does crate/kennel training work for potty training?
I recently got a 6 month old pomeranian. he is not fully potty trained. he hasnt pooped in my apt yet but he definitely has peed more than a few times. i just bought some puppy pee pads and he just immediately shreds them to pieces. i can tell they are not for him. he will just ingest the materials which could lead to even bigger problems. i also bought some odor eliminating spray to help not encourage to keep marking where he has peed. i have heard that crate/kennel training while im gone during the day can help with potty training and teaching him to only go outside by immediately taking him outside when i get home. has anyone done this to assist with potty training? or any other suggestions? help!
It’s worked for most of my dogs, most of which shredded the pee pads just like yours does. You just have to be smart about it.
First, you have to consider the type of crate. Of the dogs I’ve had, only one like the closed in ‘airline’ type crate. The rest did better in the wire ones, because then they could see out and get plenty of ventilation. I prefer those myself, mostly because they’re easier to keep clean.
Secondly, you need to consider the size. Some will argue with this, but I’ve found that it’s best to only give the dog enough room to lie down or turn around comfortably. I’ve tried giving my dogs more room, and all of them ended up eliminating in a corner of the crate. Keep it small, and they don’t do this. Just buy a crate with a partition (the wire ones usually come with one), and move it back or out entirely as the dog grows. You’ll eventually get to the point where you can take it out entirely and give the dog lots of room.
Third, bedding. Your dog doesn’t want to lie on a metal surface any more than you would. Get a bed of some sort, or even just pile towels or old shirts in the crate (actually, your old sweats would work best. The dog will smell you on them and be calmer at night or when you’re gone). Just make sure it’s washable.
Fourth, don’t leave the dog in the crate for long periods. They just can’t hold their bladders that long. Young puppies should only be crated for twenty minute to half hour blocks at first. Take them out every half hour, and then slowly increase the time once they’ve proven they can hold it that long. As long as you consistently take the dog out, you shouldn’t have any accidents.
Fifth, if you DO have accidents…it’s your fault. It’s always your fault. Don’t shove the dog’s nose in it. Don’t hit the dog. Please, please don’t smack it with a newspaper. Just clean it up and start over…and I do mean, START OVER. Once a dog has an accident, it’s like you haven’t done any training at all. You have to start from scratch.
Sixth, if your dog is loose or even in the crate and starts to go, run and pick it up. Unlike humans, a dog can actually stop peeing at any point. When you pick it up, curve the butt gently under the body, and it will stop. If you can’t get to the dog in time, toss something in it’s direction (NOT at it!). A distraction is all that’s often needed to make it stop.
Seventh, if there’s an accident, you can’t just use a mop or a carpet cleaner and walk away. The dog will be able to smell what it’s done for a very long time after, even if you can’t, and then it will think that’s the bathroom. You need to get some sort of odor spray, clean it up, and then use whatever cleaning solution you would usually use on a spill. Also, if your dog keeps eliminating in the same place, keep him from returning. Block the spot. Keep the dog out of that room for a little while. If you don’t, he’ll just keep doing it.
Eight…patience. This won’t happen overnight. It’s a pain in the butt…but the alternative is a dog that will forever pee on your carpet.
